Open Evening January 29th, 2008

TAN Instructor Arjan de Haan talking:
"Not very long ago someone asked me: “why do you actually practice aikido, do you have a goal?”

In the 15 years that I have been practising aikido I have had many goals to concentrate on. It started out with simply practising. Soon I noticed that I gained bigger self-consciousness, and that became a goal in itself. Next came the third kyu and shodan rankings after which I would be allowed to wear a hakama and a black belt. Also teaching became a goal, most recently in Linköping, Sweden. In recent years this approach has changed, I no longer have clear external goals but it became more “working on ones own limitations” with as a side effect a slow but constant growth in aikido

For me, aikido is something very personal. It is something that you can approach physically as well as mentally. Something that is different for everyone, which changes constantly and increases in difficulty the further you get along the path. Aikido is something that one does solely for oneself, but with others."
(March 20th, 2007)
